Chip Smith, Partner
Chip Smith is no stranger to the task of refurbishing and renovating golf courses, with over 25 years of experience in the business. His company, Atlantic Golf Management, has successfully turned around the struggling operations on hundreds of courses across the United States. One of the more notable courses that Smith brought back to life is the Tournament Players Club in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Purchased in 2006, the course became one of the very few five-star courses in the country after only a few year's of Chip's management.
Doug Marty, Partner
A devoted golfer, Doug Marty has been a South Florida resident for over 15 years. Doug’s background is in business and manufacturing, and he is the owner and president of Air Guide Manufacturing, a Florida-based company. As a resident of Wellington, Doug has seen the growing need for an exclusive and quality golf country club, and he is proud to partner with Chip and Atlantic Golf Management. Doug played an instrumental part in the early stages developing the Wanderers Golf Club and was a Founding Member.
Anthony Apple, Agronomist & Partner
Anthony Apple has more than 34 years of experience in the golf industry with an exceptional background in golf course projects, program and operations management. After receiving his degree from North Carolina State University in 1982, Apple’s career began at Greensboro Country Club in Greensboro, NC. He currently serves as Director of Golf Operations for The Witch Golf Links, The Wizard Golf Links and The Man O’War Golf Links in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina.
Julie Pickens, Membership Director
Julie Pickens joins Wellington National as the new Membership Director, and brings her talent and years of business experience with her. Julie has spent much of her career working entities such as the International Polo Club Palm Beach, Breakers Palm Beach and Morton's Steak House, where she ran food and beverage operations as well as membership. Her goal as the new Membership Director is to carry over the skills she gained at her previous prestigious locations to really interact and connect with club members, making for a world-class country club experience.
Ted Strelec, General Manager and Director of Golf
Ted Strelec joins the team at Wellington National after a long and famed tenure at Bear Lakes Country Club as both the Head Golf Professional and Director of Golf. Ted has lived in South Florida most of his life and has established a deep network of lifelong connections both inside and outside the golf community. Outside of his profession, Ted has served as the President of the Board for the Jupiter Horsemen’s Association. Ted is looking forward to putting his forward-thinking dedication to the game of golf and eye for detail to work at Wellington National.
dave alpeter, teaching & Asst. golf PROFESSIONAL
Dave Alpeter joins the team as the Teaching & Assistant Golf Professional. Originally from Ohio, Dave is a Class A PGA Professional and master club repair and fitting specialist. Dave was the Head Golf Professional for two public facilities in Fargo, North Dakota, and has served as Club Professional and Teaching Professional at private and public courses and resorts across Florida. He is active in the tournament scene, and has 19 holes-in-one on record. Dave hopes to create a world-class golf program at Wellington National, and looks forward to helping members reach their maximum potential while keeping it simple and having fun.
Melanie O'Brien, Director
of Special Events
With more than 25 years of experience in the private club industry, Melanie's focus is in catering and special events. She began her career during her time attending the Art Institute in Ft. Lauderdale, and very quickly realized that the hospitality industry was for her. Promoted thru various positions including Dining Room Management, Catering, Food and Beverage Director, she realized this was where she shined. Whether creating menus or developing ideas for centerpieces and themes, Melanie enjoys the creative aspect of this business. As the Director of Special Events at Wellington National, she looks forward to assisting in planning various special events from corporate dinners to graduations brunches, romantic weddings and member events.
David Ahbol, Director of Food & Beverage
As the son of a Navy dad, David and his family lived in Japan, Puerto Rico and Spain before finally settling in Jupiter, Florida. With such a global perspective, David acquired a deep appreciation of cultures, foods and beverage from other countries and developed a palate for wine and cuisines. Armed with an associate degree from Palm Beach State College, David worked and thrived in Nantucket at several amazing restaurants, three of which he eventually owned. No stranger to golf clubs, David participated in the opening team for the Nantucket Golf Club and later served as Food & Beverage Director at Wycliffe Golf & Country Club. In South Florida, he managed the crowd favorite Palm Beach Grill (Houstons), as well as several other significant hot spots on Palm Beach. David is excited to bring his talents to the club.
